Welcome to Blended Course Design: Strategies for Success!

Workshop presented by Faculty Development Staff

Monday, March 8, 2010

8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Altgeld Hall 100

wiki: blended2010.pbworks.com

Overview:

Over the last few years, a growing number of courses have been incorporating online elements into traditional face-to-face instruction. This movement has led to the emergence of a blended teaching and learning approach, which, in turn, has increased the need to discuss the educational benefits and underlying challenges of this type of instructional delivery. This interactive hands-on workshop will explore the advantages of blended learning through pedagogical options, tools for meaningful communication, and ways of successful assessment of student participation and work. We will focus on designing a blended course using sound instructional principles and technologies for online teaching and learning and discuss the decisions that need to be made for blended learning approach to be a success.

During the second half of the workshop, participants will be organized into teams, each of which will focus on one of the three facets of a blended course: content delivery, communication, and assessment of student learning. Our workshop facilitators will guide the teams in modifying a face-to-face course to one with blended learning components. Participants will record their discussions in a wiki and present their findings online to the whole group via Wimba Classroom. The tentative schedule for the workshop is as follows:
